Sometimes our kids appear so sweet and innocent.
Other times they sort of look like they are up to something.
A few weeks ago Danelle’s preschool did their regular Friday science section on Crystals. Later that day I asked her if they made crystals, and she said no. So I decided to try making some with her. I sort of ended up doing most of the work, but she enjoyed the process regardless, and especially the end result.
To make our crystal, I super saturated some sugar into water, without getting too much on the glass stove top even. I believe I used a ration of 2:1, sugar to water. Then I poured this into a clear tumbler so we could watch the crystal grow over time. To give the crystal something to grow on, I rigged up some string to a popsicle stick. Danelle helped me get the string wet and then we rolled it into some dry sugar and let that dry for a bit. We then lowered the string into the tumbler and set the lid over the top.
After a week, this is what the setup looked like.
The crystal was pretty cool, really showing off the squareness of the sugar.
One other thing we did at the start of the process was add a bit of orange flavoring to the sugar water. This resulted in a very tasty crystal that was devoured by two children as quickly as we could get pieces off the string. Overall a very sticky, tasty and successful science project.
Today we went to Woodland Park Zoo for the first time this year. It’s been a while since we have been there, but today there was lots of activity out there. Including lots of animals that don’t usually seem to be that active. These days when we get there the girls really like to visit the new penguin exhibit.
Danelle thought she saw a baby penguin through one of the windows, so Thea kept repeating baby while we were there.
The birds were excited to see food being offered to them.
Danelle managed to get two birds on her stick at once.
We managed to get a picture here with some monkeys in the shot. There is also a siamang.
Near here we also saw the Tapirs playing in the water, which was a first for us.
And as always, on the way out of the zoo, we have to stop at the Zoomazium.
And of course, to me the highlight of this post, here is a map of our track as we walked through the zoo. We kind of go in circles it would seem.

The reason it is my favorite part probably has something to do with it was generated by my new phone, along with all the pictures and videos in the post. I really enjoy playing with new electronics.
Last night we made the annual Trick or Treating trip. Danelle has a pretty firm grasp on how it all works this year and was ready to go. Our first stop was to meet up with some of her friends at Bothell’s Country Village. It was filled with cartoon characters of just about every type.
After that we made a quick dinner break before heading to Redmond Town Center where we normally go. By that point Thea started to walk up to people on her own and then beam when they handed her something also. She usually got sad when we helped her put it in her treat bag so her hands were empty for the next stop. By the end of the night we are stocked with about a year’s worth of treats. Too bad Danelle doesn’t like the candies with nuts, since she has said that Mom and Dad can eat all of those that they want. She seems to like the rest though.
Per tradition, we carved some pumpkins this year. Rather than doing them at home, Danelle’s preschool was hosting a pumpkin carving night that we attended. Dayna had also carved one the weekend earlier at a church pumpkin party. Danelle started to help, but didn’t want to get anything on her hands.
Since this was technically a Dad and kid event, the two workers that night were Dad and Danelle. For some reason pretty much every Mom and sibling, younger or older, tagged along. But the dads ended up doing most of the work, with their helpers.
In contrast to past pumpkin carving times, Danelle got her hands right in the thick of it. She even drew the faces on our pumpkins which we cut out. She is becoming quite the artist.
On the way out the door, someone had to make sure they could get all the pumpkin seeds possible. Those have been very tasty the last couple of days.
