Happy Birthday to Me, or, Adventures without the Daddy

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

While Shane was off having a grand time in New Orleans enjoying a 5 star view and big sandwiches, I and the girls had our fun times here in Kirkland trying to stay cool and sane!

Our first job was to return Diezel, the 9mo yellow lab still learning how to be an obedient adult doggy.  We watched him for 1 week prior to Shane’s departure.  The girls liked him well enough, but Danelle couldn’t help to comment several times after we took Diezel home, that Koa is a “good dog.”  I think Thea was just happy to not have to watch for the head height wagging labrador tail!

Shane was gone for 5 days; one of which was my birthday.  Since we knew this would be the case, Danelle and I had ordered me a cake from Costco earlier in the week.  She picked the decorations.  Before church, Amazon fresh delivered my birthday surprise from Shane and the girls:  a dozen roses with a vase.

Here are the Amazon Fresh crates with Thea having a look:

Oh, the fun a 1 yr old has with recyclables:

After church, we picked up my cake (had to park in the far reaches of the Costco lot–Sunday is the busiest day for the Kirkland store), and had lunch.  Danelle said we needed candles (which she helped to place) and then she sang to me.

And we ate our cake… (Thea using her utensil correctly.)

Everyone enjoyed the cake, and here is what we had left over.

A lot of cake for 3 people, 2 of which are under age 4.  Thankfully I have a new refrigerator that is large enough to hold a Costco cake.  See?  (The whole cake box fit on the bottom shelf.  On the top, you will also see a big piece I had cut to take to a friend–forgot it, so it ended up in the freezer before our vacation).

Oh yeah, there was also “birthday donuts” in our amazon fresh order that Daddy had sent to us.  With all that cake, they just stayed closed and in the refrigerator until our trip to Katie and Cole’s wedding…

We also spent some time at the parks and with friends while Shane was away.  One highlight was checking out the Montlake Terrace pool with our friends Jacky, Ben and Levi, and Jacky’s mom.  It took surprisingly long for Danelle to warm up to the water (I guess 9mo out of the water is a really long time for a 3 yr old).   So, although she is not floating on her back by herself anymore, and swimming to the edge of the pool from 10 feet out, she did enjoy the time in the water.  And so did Thea and I.  Thanks Jacky!

Happy Birthday Thea

A few weeks ago (4th of July to be exact) Thea had her first birthday. We celebrated in Moses Lake with our family. Of course one of the highlights of a birthday is the cake, which Grandma Hall supplied, showing Aunt Amy isn’t the only one that can decorate a cake.

With some help from big sister, the candle was eventually blown out.

She even ate a bit of cake, but not much as it was late and she was tired of sitting.

After eating she ran around and explored Ben and Kelli’s house before we got to presents.

The next day at Grandma’s house a 2nd explorer found some party hats that fit smaller heads, so of course Thea got one.

Warning a scene of animal cruelty follows:

The poor dog didn’t really want to wear that hat for too long, even if it was for one of his two favorite girls.

New things…

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Well, I haven’t blogged in for ever, and Shane hasn’t blogged in a while. So here is a listing of fun new things around here.

House.
The bathroom vanity is finished. It looks great, and one sink is dripless. Just have to get time for Shane to reseat the other sink drain to make it dripless too, then we can have 2 functioning sinks again. :)
We got a “new” couch. It is nice and comfy, and not 60 years old. It also has no holes. And, we managed to get it while my arm was casted and Shane was really protective of it, so I didn’t even have to move it (just drove my friends pickup to transport it)!

I also got a “new” GE profile stainless steel french door refrigerator to replace the 20+yr old almond GE fridge we had. A HUGE improvement–both in capacity, look, and energy savings. (Our other fridge had non-sealing seals, and no one ever looked in the fruit/veggie drawers.) Shane says he feels bad now when he opens the fridge and can see all the fruit and veggies–like he should be eating them or something. :) I think that is a good thing.  (PS–the hand-prints are courtesy of the movers we hired.  You actually don’t see them much in our kitchen lighting, but the flash really brings them out!)

Girls.
Danelle is so into being big, and figuring out relationships. She is fairly certain her friend Mimi and she should like all the same things, and do everything together. That works, except when there are 4 other little girls and a boy who also want “in” on things. She has really enjoyed all the extra people we’ve had around wilst I’ve healed. I think she will like preschool in the fall. I hope she doesn’t drive everyone nuts with her prescription for the way things should be…
She has also started to “read” books aloud to Shane or I. This makes me very happy. Of course, she isn’t actually reading the words, but at least she is showing interest in reading books herself, and not just me reading to her.
Finally, she has really started to color really well. She has the concept of coloring in the lines DOWN, and she is changing colors appropriately (for a while, she was just coloring everything on the page the same color). I’ve seen a lot of growth in her.  Here is a picture where she is protecting her paints from her sister–

Thea is a walking, signing machine. She’s been walking about 1 month, and she is quite good at it. She signs nurse consistently, and also more. Sometimes I see eat, and all done. She is also a very independent kid. Loves to climb. Doesn’t want her sister to knock her over and is very vocal about that or anytime something doesn’t work the way she thinks it should. She is very right handed, and also rather mechanical. It is very interesting to me to watch her as she tries to take something apart that she’s seen taken apart, or otherwise operate some device. She likes to laugh. She also likes to shake her head at you with a great big smile as she moves in a direction she knows she isn’t supposed to (up the stairs, or toward the computer). So, she is pretty fun right now.

Thanks Kimberly

It’s been almost 7 years, enough with the insanity.

Time to Swim!

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

On Tuesday morning, before we had changed out of jammies, Danelle came to me and told me she wanted to go swimming (with swim hat and goggles in hand). We haven’t been swimming since Thea was born–I just don’t know how to do it without extra adult help. So, I think she is missing it.

I told her that we couldn’t go today (we had Bible Study), but that she could pretend swim, then I tried to finish email. She said, “K”, and ran off. Next thing I know, she comes back with her jammies and underwear off with her swim diaper in their place, her swim cap on and her goggles (no glasses), and says she needs help getting her swim suit on… When I said pretend, I meant the whole get up too, but she just meant pretend swimming–with appropriate gear. Here are some pics of her pretend swimming.

Guess we need to go swimming again pretty soon. She told Shane yesterday, “We can go swimming at Waterbabies! Yes. We Can!” Such conviction!
