New things…

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Well, I haven’t blogged in for ever, and Shane hasn’t blogged in a while. So here is a listing of fun new things around here.

House.
The bathroom vanity is finished. It looks great, and one sink is dripless. Just have to get time for Shane to reseat the other sink drain to make it dripless too, then we can have 2 functioning sinks again. :)
We got a “new” couch. It is nice and comfy, and not 60 years old. It also has no holes. And, we managed to get it while my arm was casted and Shane was really protective of it, so I didn’t even have to move it (just drove my friends pickup to transport it)!

I also got a “new” GE profile stainless steel french door refrigerator to replace the 20+yr old almond GE fridge we had. A HUGE improvement–both in capacity, look, and energy savings. (Our other fridge had non-sealing seals, and no one ever looked in the fruit/veggie drawers.) Shane says he feels bad now when he opens the fridge and can see all the fruit and veggies–like he should be eating them or something. :) I think that is a good thing.  (PS–the hand-prints are courtesy of the movers we hired.  You actually don’t see them much in our kitchen lighting, but the flash really brings them out!)

Girls.
Danelle is so into being big, and figuring out relationships. She is fairly certain her friend Mimi and she should like all the same things, and do everything together. That works, except when there are 4 other little girls and a boy who also want “in” on things. She has really enjoyed all the extra people we’ve had around wilst I’ve healed. I think she will like preschool in the fall. I hope she doesn’t drive everyone nuts with her prescription for the way things should be…
She has also started to “read” books aloud to Shane or I. This makes me very happy. Of course, she isn’t actually reading the words, but at least she is showing interest in reading books herself, and not just me reading to her.
Finally, she has really started to color really well. She has the concept of coloring in the lines DOWN, and she is changing colors appropriately (for a while, she was just coloring everything on the page the same color). I’ve seen a lot of growth in her.  Here is a picture where she is protecting her paints from her sister–

Thea is a walking, signing machine. She’s been walking about 1 month, and she is quite good at it. She signs nurse consistently, and also more. Sometimes I see eat, and all done. She is also a very independent kid. Loves to climb. Doesn’t want her sister to knock her over and is very vocal about that or anytime something doesn’t work the way she thinks it should. She is very right handed, and also rather mechanical. It is very interesting to me to watch her as she tries to take something apart that she’s seen taken apart, or otherwise operate some device. She likes to laugh. She also likes to shake her head at you with a great big smile as she moves in a direction she knows she isn’t supposed to (up the stairs, or toward the computer). So, she is pretty fun right now.

High Speed

“Dispatch this is 504. Suspect got away.”

“504 this is dispatch. He what?”

“Dispatch this is 504. He got away”

So goes one of the key sequences in High Speed, one of my favorite pinball machines of all time.  Immediately following this is when the game goes into Multiball.  This game was one of those that my parents had back when they ran their game route while I was in Jr. High and High School.  They had two copies of the game, so fairly often one was in the shop being cleaned or worked on.  This required some playtesting afterwords that I had to drudge through.  In the process I memorized the flow of the game pretty thoroughly.  A few years back there was an opportunity to buy one of the two machines my parents had, so it found itself in our garage.  After Danelle was born, boxes and other things got stored on and around it.  About a month ago we dug it out while organizing the garage and Danelle gave it a try.  Then tonight while we were in the garage she wanted to play again.  Of course I couldn’t refuse that kind of request.

After she went to bed I played it a bit more myself.  The game is as fun as I remember.  Although I’m pretty sure I need to level it some more, as it kept drifting to the left while I was playing, and one of the ramps was a bit harder to hit than it should have been.

Octopus on a Seaweed Bed

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

This afternoon Danelle and I were flipping through a cookbook looking for something interesting to make for dinner.  She decided the boiled octopus on a bed of seaweed looked really yummy.  So we of course had to make that.  Turns out we were out of octopus, so had to make a quick shopping trip for ingredients.  First here is a shot of the boiling octopus.  We got several little ones so we could each have our own.

Danelle was in charge of preparing the seaweed.  She did a marvelous job.

Here is the proud cook with the finished dishes.

And a close-up for the curious.

As Danelle said, “It was Delicious!”

Mobile Pictures

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

I honestly don’t really care for using a phone as a general purpose camera.  In particular I find it funny at the zoo, a wedding, or some other place with lots of people taking picture to see everyone holding up their razr for all the photo ops.  At the same time, I’ll admit to wanting to getting a picture and only having my phone with me.  So here are a couple I finally took the time to get off my phone this past week.

This first one is from last spring when Danelle and I went kite flying.  Danelle had lots of fun running with the kite and got some air a few times.  Try to see her in the below picture:

The story behind this second picture is that ever since figuring out walking, Thea has continued to improve her climbing.  I’m not sure there has been anything reasonable height she hasn’t tried to climb.  At church this past weekend she managed this one all by herself once she spotted a stool from a bit away and shot off for it.

Other recent accomplishments include climbing onto the couch by herself and nearly toppling into the bathtub once – proving it’s a good thing an adult is around while she is watching Danelle’s bath.  Gotta go now, she’s busy getting into Danelle’s toys on the table behind the couch…

Playing at the Zoo

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Some people like to go to the zoo to see the animals.  We do as well, but the kids also really like some of the play areas in the zoo.  There is one outdoor play area kind of tucked off the beaten path that is pretty fun.

There is also the indoor Zoomazium that Danelle has really enjoyed for a while now.  Thea is also starting to have fun in the toddler area as well.

She especially likes to climb these days.

Inside of the play area is an unusual egg as well.

I mean a really funny egg, that happened to hatch while we were there.

Not everyday you have two cute things hatch out of the same egg.
